Frequently asked questions

Do I have to go to Portugal?
In most cases, no. Almost everything can be handled through a power of attorney signed at a consulate or before a local notary with an apostille. The main exception is the declaration of heirs, which requires declarants to attend in person, and they can often be relatives or friends who live in Portugal.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the case. The initial assessment is free. After it, we send you a proposal with the stages of the work and the fee for each one, so you always know what you will pay.
How long does it take?
It depends mainly on the state of the documents and the properties. A division with everything in order is settled much faster than an inheritance with unregistered land. In the proposal we give you a realistic estimate for your case.
Which documents do I need to gather?
Whatever you have: property tax records, certificates, old deeds, IMI receipts, death or birth certificates. You don't need to have everything. We can obtain many documents ourselves in Portugal.
Will I have to pay taxes?
The death of someone who leaves assets in Portugal must always be reported to the Tax Office, even when there is no tax to pay. The spouse, children and parents are, as a rule, exempt from stamp duty on the inheritance. A sale may give rise to a capital gain. The office's tax specialists look at your situation before each step.
What if one of the heirs won't cooperate?
No one is obliged to remain in an undivided inheritance forever. There are alternatives, such as the other heirs buying that heir's share or, as a last resort, inventory proceedings.
My children don't speak Portuguese well. Can they talk to you?
Yes. We work in Portuguese, French and English.
Is BUPi still worth it now that it is no longer free?
Yes. Identifying rural and mixed plots has become necessary to sell, give away or divide them, and the current costs are low compared with the value of the land.
How is my information handled?
Under professional confidentiality and in line with the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Details are in our privacy policy.
How do I pay?
By bank transfer, or by debit or credit card.
